about

We've been living in the in-between since the pandemic started back in 2019, whether we realised it or not. We certainly didn't when we (my wife, unborn son and I) jetted off to Portugal for a couple of friends' wedding in February 2020(!) This trip turned out to be our babymoon (UK lockdown ensued just a month after we got back) and with it came opportunities to reflect on life before, during and on the way out(?) of the pandemic over the last 16+ months.

Liminal Space is a three part EP series I started writing during UK Lockdown 1 in 2020. Based on a series of field recordings captured in Cascais, Lisbon, East London and Switzerland, it charts a series of reflections of living in an unfamiliar place - in a place that's not the world we left behind when the pandemic started, and not the one we'll have on the other side. Much like the Israelites in the wilderness for 40 years or Jesus and countless others in scripture who had to journey into a place that's not 'home' - so we have all been forced to inhabit the desert. Barren and hard as this space has been - it's not without hope - the liminal spaces in those times were always marked by encounters with the Living God - be it Moses and his burning bush moment, pillars of cloud and fire for navigation and heat, or even audible voices affirming the identity of Jesus, these times are opportunities to allow God to speak if we are ready to listen.

Part 1 covers pre-pandemic life and being dropped abrubptly into lockdown. Opener Graça Dawning introduces us to the beauty of the city of Lisbon early in the morning - the fresh air, the vibrant colours and exciting skylines - life unhindered and uninterrupted. Carcavelos picks up the energy with punchy broken beats and bass setting the scene for a carefree beach-banger - for us the trip was about celebrating our friend's wedding and preparing to celebrate the arrival of our little one. Title track and closer to part 1, Liminal Space shifts the tone dramatically - as the reality of things kicked in for us, the weight of what the pandemic meant for us personally was felt - seperation in the run up and during the birth of our first child, uncertainty, constantly shifting information and the spectre of fear - a heavyweight dubstep affair built around cinematic brass arrangements, it captures how broadsided my family felt during this season.

The EP is written as a segway, with each track blending one into the next. The same goes for between the parts too, so keep you eyes and ears open for parts 2 and 3 coming later this year!
